It has to do with the notion that the so-called hysteria (a diagnosis liberally dispensed to female patience for the good part of the late 19th and early 20th century), is in fact a condition that signals creativity, a performative form of expression akin to artistic expression.<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/juliafriedman.org\/?attachment_id=2445\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2445\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2445\" alt=\"Screen shot 2013-07-26 at 11.16.04 AM\" src=\"https:\/\/juliafriedman.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Screen-shot-2013-07-26-at-11.16.04-AM2-400x386.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/juliafriedman.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Screen-shot-2013-07-26-at-11.16.04-AM2-400x386.png 400w, https:\/\/juliafriedman.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Screen-shot-2013-07-26-at-11.16.04-AM2.png 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Remizov&#8217;s understanding of hysteria and creativity bridges symbolist and surrealist interpretations of mental illness. His version hysteria\/possession\/creative release was at once a dialogue with contemporaneous artists, particulary French surrealists, and the reevaluation of symbolist notions of mental illness.
