She is also one of the experts featured in the recent award-winning documentary\u00a0<i>Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/juliafriedman.org\/?attachment_id=2650\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2650\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2650\" alt=\"1780795_10202573952566430_1549564968_n\" src=\"https:\/\/juliafriedman.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/1780795_10202573952566430_1549564968_n1-400x300.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/juliafriedman.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/1780795_10202573952566430_1549564968_n1-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/juliafriedman.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/1780795_10202573952566430_1549564968_n1.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lee&#8217;s visit was followed by that of another <em>Artforum<\/em> colleague\u2014Michael Ned Holte\u2014a writer and independent curator based in Los Angeles. He is the author of\u00a0<em>Proper Names<\/em>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.golden-spike.com\/\">Golden Spike Press<\/a>). His texts have appeared in numerous publications including\u00a0<em>Live Art in LA: Performance in Southern California, 1970-1983<\/em>\u00a0(Routledge),\u00a0<em>In the Shadow of Numbers: Charles Gaines Selected Works from 1975-2012\u00a0<\/em>(Pomona College Museum of Art\/Pitzer Art Galleries),\u00a0<em>Richard Hawkins\u2014Third Mind\u00a0<\/em>(Art Institute of Chicago\/Yale),\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Roy McMakin: When is a Chair Not a Chair\u00a0<\/em>(Skira\/Rizzoli), as well as print and online periodicals such as\u00a0<em>Afterall<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Artforum International<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Art Journal<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>East of Borneo<\/em>.\u00a0Holte has organized numerous exhibitions including \u201cTemporary Landmarks &amp; Moving Situations\u201d at Expo Chicago; \u201cSupport Group\u201d at Thomas Solomon at Cottage Home, Los Angeles; \u201cLaying Bricks\u201d at Wallspace Gallery, New York, and \u201cCeline and Julie Go Boating\u201d at Anna Helwing Gallery, Los Angeles. Along with Connie Butler, he is co-curator of the 2014 edition of \u201cMade in L.A.\u201d at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/juliafriedman.org\/?attachment_id=2653\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2653\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2653 aligncenter\" alt=\"tumblr_inline_ms4l9yGZ0W1qccmm8\" src=\"https:\/\/juliafriedman.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/tumblr_inline_ms4l9yGZ0W1qccmm8.jpg\" width=\"274\" height=\"365\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This past Wednesday, the students had a chance to engage with two guests: one from New York, another from Los Angeles. Mat Gleason is well known in the Los Angeles art scene for his fearless art criticism, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coagula.com\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Coagula Art Journal<\/em><\/a> he has been publishing for over two decades. Mat is also a fellow blogger at the Huffington Post, where his profile describes Gleason as a &#8220;famously provocative local art critic,&#8221; a &#8220;maverick,&#8221; and &#8220;insufferably cynical.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/juliafriedman.org\/?attachment_id=2655\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2655\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2655\" alt=\"2013-9-9-033\" src=\"https:\/\/juliafriedman.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/2013-9-9-033-400x300.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>James Panero, based in New York, is\u00a0\u00a0is an\u00a0American\u00a0cultural critic and the\u00a0executive editor\u00a0of\u00a0<i><a title=\"The New Criterion\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_New_Criterion\">The New Criterion<\/a>.<\/i>\u00a0In 1999 he worked in\u00a0Gstaad,\u00a0Switzerland\u00a0as a writing assistant to\u00a0<a title=\"William F. Buckley Jr\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_F._Buckley_Jr\">William F. Buckley Jr<\/a>\u00a0on his novel\u00a0<i>Spytime: The Undoing of James Jesus Angleton<\/i>\u00a0(Harcourt, 2000).\u00a0Before joining\u00a0<i>The New Criterion<\/i>\u00a0in 2001, he was a graduate student in the History of Art and Architecture department at\u00a0Brown University, where his area of focus was late-nineteenth-century French modernism. James and I shared an advisor, Professor Kermit S. Champa whose untimely passing in 2004 was a loss for all his students. James wrote an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newcriterion.com\/articles.cfm\/kermit-swiler-champa-1939-2004-1121\" target=\"_blank\">obituary article<\/a> for <em>The New Criterion<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/juliafriedman.org\/?attachment_id=2656\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2656\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2656\" alt=\"image.axd\" src=\"https:\/\/juliafriedman.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/image.axd_-400x225.jpeg\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/juliafriedman.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/image.axd_-400x225.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/juliafriedman.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/image.axd_.jpeg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>James led an engaging and thought provoking discussion of his recent editorial article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newcriterion.com\/articles.cfm\/Future-tense--VII--What-s-a-museum--7298\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Future Tense VII: What&#8217;s a Museum?.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our next scheduled seminar guest is Barry Schwabsky,\u00a0the art critic of\u00a0<em>The Nation<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/juliafriedman.org\/?attachment_id=2658\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2658\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2658\" alt=\"Barry+in+the+Bevier\" src=\"https:\/\/juliafriedman.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Barry+in+the+Bevier-400x319.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/juliafriedman.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Barry+in+the+Bevier-400x319.jpg 400w, https:\/\/juliafriedman.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Barry+in+the+Bevier.jpg 466w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Schwabsky has been writing about art for the <em>Nation<\/em> since 2005, and his essays have appeared in many other publications, including\u00a0<em>Flash Art<\/em>\u00a0(Milan),\u00a0<em>Artforum\u2014<\/em>as an international co-editor he has worked with every one of my own reviews dispatched from Tokyo, the\u00a0<em>London Review of Books<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Art in America<\/em>. His books include\u00a0<em>The Widening Circle: Con\u00adsequences of Modernism in Contemporary Art<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Vitamin P: New Perspectives in Painting<\/em>\u00a0and several volumes of poetry, the most recent being\u00a0<em>Book Left Open in the Rain<\/em>\u00a0(Black Square Editions\/The Brooklyn Rail). Schwabsky has contributed to books and catalogs on artists such as Henri Matisse, Alighiero Boetti, Jessica Stockholder and Gillian Wearing, and has taught at the School of Visual Arts, Pratt Institute, New York University, Goldsmiths College (University of London) and Yale University.\u00a0We have been reading chapters from his most recent book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sternberg-press.com\/?pageId=1459\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Words for Art<\/em><\/a> (Sternberg Press, 2013) throughout the semester, and it will certainly be a treat to welcome him at ASU, albeit virtually.
